COAT OF ARMS

We copy the following description of the family Coat of Arms from BURKE'S Heraldry, London, 1851:

"RIPLEY, (and Ripley, Co. of York.)

"Per chev. dovetailed and vert. three lions ramp. counterchanged. CREST, a demi-lion ramp. reguard. vert. collared ar. holding between the paws an escutcheon, per chev. or. and az.

"RIPLEY, (Westminster, Co. of Middlesex; granted in 1742.) The same arms and crest.

"RIPLEY, (London.) the same arms, CREST, a demi-Bengal tiger, ducally gorged ppr."

From the Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names, by William Arthur, New York, 1857:

"RIPLEY, local, a market town in West Yorkshire, England, from the Saxon Rypan, to divide or separate, and ley, uncultivated land, a pasture."

INTRODUCTION

-----:o:----

The complier of this Genealogy has used the means and facilities at his command to make it complete, so far as he has been able to carry it, yet he is fully sensible of its imperfections. Having been precluded from visiting localities where much information could probably have been obtained, he has been obliged to depend almost entirely upon correspondence; and while he acknowledges with gratitude the assistance he has received from members of the family and others, he may be permitted to say that many of the letters of inquiry have failed to elicit an answer.

It is not claimed that the work is free from errors; some discrepancies in dates may be accounted for by change from old to new style, and from the practice of double dating which prevailed up to 1752. Thus, Feb. 15 1741-2. The latter is the true date as now practiced. Some family genealogies which he has received must have been copied years ago, perhaps repeatedly, by different hands; others have been complied from materials recently collected by different persons, and it will not be surprising if errors have crept in; this has occasionally appeared in a diffference of dates. He has endeavored by repeated revisions to avoid personal error, yet he is brought to the conclusion that perfect accuracy in a work of this kind must be very rare. He sends it forth such as he has been able to make it, trusting that it will be admitted that he has succeeded, at least partially, in a work which no one before him has attempted.

He does not stop at this point from a want of interest in the work; it has been throughout a pleasant occupation, and one that he would gladly continue, but he belongs to a generation that has almost entirely passed away, and has advanced age and its attendant infirmities admonish him that it is better to secure what has been gained by printing it, than to continue his researches at the risk of having the results of his labors scattered and lost.

He will be glad to have errors pointed out, but while he would willingly assist in enlarging the work as strength and opportunity are afforded, he can give no pledge as to the future. A beginning has been made which it is hoped will be carried forward by younger and abler hands.

To the cousins, whose co-operation has been the means of making the Genealogy what it is, and whose kindness and active sympathy have cheered him forward in his work, he bids an affectionate farewell.

GENEALOGY

-----o-----

(In making up this table, we consider the grandsons of WILLIAM, the first immigrant, the patriarch, and keep their families separate. Figures in parentheses before a name refer back to the father; after a name they refer forward to children; and one may thus trace his descent, and the descendants of any one may be easily found. Should further communications be made and a printed name be used, it is requested that the number and page be given. See the index.)

In 1638 WILLIAM RIPLEY with his wife, two sons and two daughters, came from Hingham, Norfolk County, England, and settled at Hingham, Mass. He married a second wife, Elizabeth, widow of Thomas Thaxter, Sept. 29, 1654, and died July 20, 1656. His widow married John Dwight, of Dedham, Jan. 30, 1658, and died July 17, 1660. In his will, which is dated June 30, 1656, he mentions only his sons. He was admitted a Freeman May 18, 1642. His town lot which he drew in 1638, contained four acres, and is on the main street Lower Plain, or Hingham Centre. The house of one of his descendants, Ebed Ripley, now stands upon it. 'We find that Hingham was simply the point of his departure from England. The records of the Parish Church at Hingham have been "carefully examined from 1600, when they commence, to 1638, and the name Ripley does not once occur, nor is any one of the name known in Hingham, or its vicinity." The company of emigrants appears to have been made up at Hingham, and William Ripley must have come from some other place and joined it. We have not been able to discover the place of his residence in England.

FAMILY OF JOSHUA

(7) JOSHUA, m Nov 28, 1682, Hannah Bradford. She was a daughter of William Bradford, Jun, dep Gov of Plymouth Colony, and grand daughter of Gov. William Bradford, who came over in the Mayflower, in 1620. She was born May 9, 1662, and died May 28, 1738. They settled first at Hingham, Mass, moved to Norwich, Ct, Oct 10, 1688, and to Windham, March 23, 1691. His first purchase of land in Windham, as appears in the record, was May 26, 1688. The first house in Windham was built in 1689. The inhabitants "obtained a grant of town privileges in May, 1692," the first town meeting was held June 11, 1692, and Mr Ripley was elected the first town clerk and treasurer. He was also a justice of the peace. We copy the inscriptions that were placed over their graves. We give the first as far as it could be traced; the second appears to be complete: "Here lies peacefully interred the body of JOSHUA RIPLEY, Esq, one of His Most Worshipful Majesty's Justices of the Peace, for the County of Windham, died "_____ the town record says May 8, 1739. "Here lies interred the body of that most worthy, and virtuous, and most ingenuous gentlewoman, Mrs HANNAH B RIPLEY, the well beloved consort of Joshua Ripley, Esq, who after she had led a most lovely and eventful life, fell asleep in Jesus, May 28, 1738, in ye 76th year of her age."

FAMILY OF WILLIAM

of West Bridgewater, Mass.

We find in Mitchell's History of Bridgewater that "WILLIAM RIPLEY, and his wife Mary, settled in West Bridgewater, Mass." We have not been able to discover his origin. A William Ripley served in Gallup's Company in the unsuccessful expedition against Quebec, in 1690, and a William Ripley married Mary Corbison, of Taunton, Oct 11, 1693. We are inclined to think that the same individual is intended, and that he settled in West Bridgewater about the time of his marriage. His children were contemporary with those of the grandsons of William of Hingham. Five families of the following table are taken from Mr Mitchell's work. His children were:

In the beginning of the genealogy of this family and that of Jeremiah, we were greatly assisted by the late William B Weaver, Esq, of Willimantle, Ct. He had been for several years collecting materials for a history of Windham, and kindly gave us access to his papers, and assisted in selecting what was adapted to our purpose. It is to be hoped that some one will be found who will arrange the mass of materials collected with so much labor and complete the work. Windham is, next to Hingham, the point from which the largest part of our family spread about.
